Wake County Protects 28 Acres for Future Greenway

Wake County officials announced that 28 acres of mature pine hardwood forest and streambanks along a tributary of Marks Creek have been permanently protected. The property, located adjacent to existing county-owned open space, is set to create a continuous stretch of conserved land that may eventually form part of a greenway. The greenway could connect Turnipseed Nature Preserve to Triangle Land Conservancy’s 447-acre Williamson Preserve.

The project is the first to combine funding from Wake County’s Farmland Preservation Program and Open Space Preservation Program. Under the agreement, Triangle Land Conservancy holds a conservation easement over the full 28 acres, while Wake County retains an easement on 4.5 acres to allow for the future greenway connection.

This conservation effort is part of Wake County’s goal to protect 1,000 acres of green space by 2029.
