Spartanburg Fire Department Mourns Commander Tom Ivey

The Spartanburg Fire Department announced the death of Fire Commander Thomas “Tom” Ivey, who it said passed away on June 11, 2026, following a long illness.

The department said Ivey began his career in 1972 and rose through the ranks to become Fire Commander in 1990. It said he dedicated more than two decades to the department.

After retiring, the department said Ivey continued his work with the Jonesville Fire Department, the South Carolina Fire Academy, and as a Fire Instructor.

Spartanburg Fire Department officials said Ivey was recognized for his contributions with numerous honors, including the Order of the Palmetto and induction into the South Carolina Firefighters’ Association Hall of Fame.

The department extended condolences to Ivey’s wife, Rita, his family, friends, and others who served alongside him, adding that his legacy would not be forgotten.

Suspect Arrested After Domestic Dispute, K-9 Attack

Spartanburg police said officers responded to a domestic violence-related dispute on June 10 and the suspect fled in a white pickup truck. A K-9 was injured during the arrest, and the suspect was later taken into custody after a pursuit ended with a PIT maneuver.
